Meet Nina

My name is Nina Bethlehem. I was born in Hong Kong and now live and create in the serene landscapes of Drenthe, the Netherlands.

My passion for fabric flower making began over a decade ago, inspired by the delicate artistry of Japanese and Chinese masters. Learning from their traditional techniques, I have spent years developing my own approach and style, combining precision with a deep respect for the natural form of each flower.

My academic background in Department of Textiles and Clothing at Fu Jen Catholic University in Taiwan gave me a foundation in working with fabric and materials, which continues to inform the way I approach my craft today.

Moving to the Netherlands gave me something I didn't know I was looking for: stillness, and a garden of my own. Growing my own flowers transformed the way I see my craft. Being able to study the form, texture, and movement of a bloom up close has deepened my connection to each piece I make. I'm drawn to the moment a flower is en fleur, that fleeting peak of beauty, and every piece I create is an attempt to hold that moment still.

I create flowers with a realistic look, with a particular love for combining handmade blooms with vintage objects for home decoration. Each arrangement carries its own quiet story.

Teaching has always been a natural part of this journey. I find great joy in sharing what I've learned, and in watching others discover the pleasure of making something beautiful with their own hands. Through online courses and in-person workshops, I hope this craft finds its way to anyone who feels drawn to it.

History of Artificial Flowers

The history of artificial flowers dates back over 1,500 years to China, where the first artificial flowers were crafted from silk. Initially worn by the ladies of the Imperial Palace in their hair, the trend soon spread beyond the palace walls to the well-off populace and eventually reached Japan and Korea through new trade routes. By the fourteenth century, French silk flowers had become the epitome of the craft, with ongoing improvements in both fabrics and the quality of flower production. Today, artificial silk flowers continue to grace haute couture costume designs and millinery creations.
